About Us

Live Arico Animal Rescue Centre has been working hard for many years to protect the abused dogs here on the Island of Tenerife.  In reality, the Association was created on the 14th February 2000, but the first dog rescued, an Alsatian cross was on the on the 5th January 1997.  Junior’s rescue started Eugenio on the path to creating the refuge which has now helped over 6000 mistreated and abandoned dogs.

Live Arico has answered and solved animal problem for the local councils, Police, Fire Fighters and Road Conservation, and continues to do so.  We participate in Educational Programs and give informative talks on animal care and protection.  We are also members of FECAPAP (Federacion Canaria de Asociacion Protectoras de Animales y Plantas).  All this work is done in the hope that the problems here on the Island will, in time be reduced and that people will act more responsibly towards their pets, this is the only way forward.  The only way is to educate, to change the attitude of people towards the welfare of animals, they have the same right to a decent life as we do.

Live Arico is not a typical refuge with kennels and cages, the dogs are in groups where they can play and live together, and they are never left alone – they have 24 hour care.  We try to provide a home for these animals where they can live happily together.

The philosophy of Live Arico is to care for these animals as long as they need it.  We do our best to find them homes but if we can’t, they stay with us for their natural life.  It is our belief that it is not our decision to put these animals to sleep, it is not their fault they were born and have been abandoned, it is human beings that have created the problem, so it is up to us to try and put things right for them.

Live Arico is an organisation that really cares – Where animal welfare comes first”

We have around 380 dogs at the moment.  We have around 100 podencos, the poor unwanted hunting dogs who are unlikely to ever be homed, but they can live out their days with us in safety.  Although we re-home many dogs, the problem is endless, and the police of numerous Ayuntamientos still call Eugene about abandoned dogs despite no legal agreements being signed.

Our food bill is €4500 each month

Our total costs are around €10,000 each month.
